I recently received a beautiful e-mail that had a prayer proposal to save the United States of America. It has an image that is supposed to be Jesus and someone singing God Bless America as it goes through the message. It starts with a reference to 2Chronicles 7:14 and goes from there. Very impressive! Will it work?
I am reminded of Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, who prayed for the nation of Israel, his homeland. The result? He ended up saying, “the harvest is past, the summer is ended and we are not saved.” Jer. 8:20. He had quit praying for Israel. Why? God told him, “Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.” Jer. 7:16.
You mean, Jim Caniff, that if we band together and pray for America that God won’t hear us and turn this thing around? Doesn’t the Scripture say, “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”? Yes but it also says, “ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”
Before Americans pray for America they need to pray for the removal of iniquity from their hearts and lives. There is no evidence evident that Americans are willing to pray to such an end; they would prefer to pray for the nation and not disturb their sin. I, therefore, like Jeremiah, cannot pray for the salvation of the American nation; I can only pray for souls.
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psalms 9:17.
