The Apostle Paul told the children at Ephesus to, “Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”

I vividly recall when it was first pointed out to me that the reason for honoring parents was not that they are honorable, they may not be, but because they are your parents. Somebody in Hollywood must have discovered this as is evidenced in the movie, Road to Perdition, starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Jude Law. But for me the real star was Tyler Hoechlin who played Michael Sullivan, JR. The son of Tom Hanks’ character. The movie starts and pretty much ends with Tyler standing on the beach of Lake Michigan. His father was deeply involved in organized crime, including murder and robbery. He spend six weeks on the road with him in the winter of 1931 and witnessed robberies and murder. As he stands there he says that some say that, “Michael Sullivan is a decent man, and some say there is no good in him at all.” Then the story is told. Afterwards, at the end of the movie we find him on the beach of Lake Michigan again. He says, “When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was no good in him at all, I always give them the same answer. I just tell them, ‘He was my father.’”

Why is it so necessary that we honor our parents? Paul says it is so it will be well with us and we will live long on the earth. Of course he borrowed this from Moses who said basically the same thing. In short, the family is the basic unit of society. Hence it is the basic unit of the community, the state, the country, and the world. If you look around and see a world foundering and falling apart, as I do, then you should understand that it is because its basic building block, the family, is being destroyed. Thus it is the destruction of the foundation upon which our world rests. By the way the family, properly defined, consist of a husband and father (male), a wife and mother (female) and the children. In so far as is possible the father is to be the leader and breadwinner and the mother is the homemaker. Destroy this and you destroy the foundation of all other units of society: the community, the state, the country, and the world.

I could go from here to discussing why this is happening. Is it just sin running wild? Is it because of a conspiracy? Is it the sacrifice of family life for the love of money, or is it other things? Perhaps it is all these things. But one thing is sure; all the best efforts to save America by our national leaders, by our spiritual leaders and whoever else is involved in this effort will fail if we do not save the traditional family. Again, that is a male husband and father who is the leader and breadwinner. A female who is a loving wife and mother and a homemaker, and obedient, parent-honoring, children.
