Oh beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed his grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

I have seldom heard this song that it didn’t bring a lump to my throat, if not a tear to my eye. The good old USA is my homeland and I weep for it, just as I believe Jeremiah wept for Israel in his day.

I daily hear politicians proclaiming what America needs and just what programs are needed to make it a better and more prosperous nation. I also am aware of many preachers with an agenda for the salvation of the nation. So let me add my voice to the chorus and proclaim what is needed to reestablish freedom in the land and stabilize the nation.

Of course the scripture says that, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” So then, first and foremost, we need a “great awakening.” Many pray for a mighty revival, but before that may come we need to wake up to the fact that we need one. And it can only come through Jesus the Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost. Politicians, and most preachers, it seems, will not even admit that we are in that bad of shape.

You may have noticed that above I said, “reestablish freedom.” I wrote it just that way for it just doesn’t make sense anymore to call this a free country. I spent a year in Japan back about fifty years ago and as far as I could tell those Japanese were every bit as free as we were. I say, “we were” for we have steadily become more regulated and have had our freedoms whittled away since then. In a truly free country I would decide for myself whether I would wear a seatbelt in a motor vehicle. In a free country I wouldn’t have to report to the government my financial activities each year. When America was freer as it was in my youth, if you wanted to carry a gun you did so and didn’t need to get the state’s permission. In a free country you wouldn’t need lawyers, realtors and a host of others, as you do in Florida to sell your home. I could go on and on with even more convincing examples, but you get the picture.

What would it take to save America as a free nation? Well there are a few things that immediately come to mind. Here is my list:

1. The working class would have to make up their mind that they are going to be free, whatever the cost. Just let me have what I earn without regulating my efforts, as long as they are honest and lawful. Please notice that I said “lawful” not legal. God made laws, men make legalisms. As for taxes, allow only the taxes specifically allowed in the original United States Constitution. The working man and the entrepreneur get to keep all they lawfully earn and acquire by their own labor. As long as people want the government to insure them, provide for their retirement etc. etc. there can be no freedom. Whatever government provides comes with strings attached. When the government writes the checks, it is the boss, and you are the bossed. You want unemployment compensation, guaranteed healthcare etc. etc., then you can never be free. If you want more from the government, or will allow more from the government, than to “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty” then you will be a subject not a citizen. If any proposed government action raises any question whether it fits under “promote the general welfare,” then it doesn’t. The old adage still stands: “The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” We have been much to busy entertaining ourselves to be involved in vigilance.

2.         But the above would only work if stricter antitrust laws are enacted that prohibit any further mergers, and then broke up all those mergers that have formed in the last several decades. All large companies must be chopped down to size, reducing their power and promoting competition. Of course the Rockefellers, J. P. Morgans, Andrew Carnegies and that ilk wouldn’t like it and would fight it with all their power and influence but we would just have to find a way to overcome that. Just what that way is, I have no idea.

3.         Then, of course, there is the family. The apostle Paul wrote, “Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.” The promise is, “That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” It used to be known that the family was the foundation of society and hence, the nation. But seemingly every effort has been made to destroy the family. To preserve this nation the man would have to reestablish himself as the breadwinner and the head of the family. The woman then would have to leave the workplace and take her rightful place as a housewife and a homemaker. The motive for this would have to be love, not just organization. There can be no more of daddy working the first shift, mommy working the second shift and the kids left to shift for themselves. The family must be a team with each member taking his rightful place. The team needs a breadwinner and a homemaker and somebody always there to mind the children. Anything short of this is a recipe for failure: Failure of the family and failure of the nation.

The above is the least it would take to salvage this nation and to reestablish it as a free country. The chances of this happening are not “slim and none,” but none and not in a million years. What is the answer then? Just what Jesus told us:

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

If your treasures are misplaced then despair is all yours. But if your treasures are well placed, then all is well. I am glad my treasures are in heaven. Where are yours?
